Critter Abundance

It seems that Arizona has its share of interesting critters, many of which we have already had many firsthand experiences with in a short amount of time.  No bones about it...we have seen first hand: scorpions, coyotes, javelina (aka...Arizona wild hog), tarantulas, snakes, and some rather large beetle-like insects whose size could best be described in comparison to a half dollar coin.

Our favorite (strike that...my favorite) critter incident thus far can best be described as "The Kolter Scorpion Incident."  It is an event that has been appropriately added to the Orange Grove Middle School 8th Grade US History curriculum.  My left ear still has some some hearing issues, as this is the side that the phone was on when I heard the shrill screams from my wife that early August afternoon.  Of course, I shouldn't have needed the phone, as the screams were probably audible across the city of Tucson.  The box that contained this lethal killer was promptly strewn out the front door into the landscaping, where said critter was provided the opportunity to scamper away for a future terrorizing of our home.  However, upon my arrival home that afternoon, the little critter was still hiding within the shadows of the box.  I promptly dumped the box onto the driveway and smashed him with a flyswatter.

Other incidents would include (but are not limited to) the following:
1. Gila monster outside classroom door.
2. Baby Rattlesnake under my secretary's trash can.
3. Kangaroo Mouse in the teacher's lounge.
4. Tarantula outside my office door (outside).
5. King Snake outside the Art room.
6. Live Scorpion in our garage.
7. Dead Scorpion in our bathroom.
8. Can't imagine what might be next!

On a positive note, there are also many adorable desert creatures around, including quail, rabbits, lizards, gekos, and many more.  We even have seen a pair of cardinals, making us feel "Back Home Again, in Indiana" (although the male was not nearly as bright red as they grow 'em back in the Hoosier state).

God's creation never ceases to amaze me!  It has been great so far, experiencing the Sonoran Desert wildlife.

That's crazy, Trav! It sounds like you have a lot of excitement all around you. What a fun place for Kaden and Hallie to learn about wildlife in the desert - as long as they steer clear of the scorpions.

Absolutely fantastic! I bet Kaden is loving all of the creepy crawlies. Is he fascinated by them? There is much to learn about living in a totally new environment, I bet.
